Top 10 Literature for Children

Are you looking for reading material for your kids?  Here are some ideas for books you may not have picked up, or read yet.  We have kids aged six to 16 so we decided to split our top ten lists into three categories, 6-8, 9-12, and 13-16, but of course this is only a basic guideline to organize material.  Depending on your children’s interests and reading ability they may or may not match something from their age range.  Any suggestions on books your kids just love would be most appreciated as well as we are always looking for new reading material.

With this age range it is all about exposing kids to books and them enjoying it.  Reading should not be an ordeal, the books on this list are the ones our kids love.  They are certainly not the top literary or bestselling books for this age.  What is appealing about them is the use of words, the illustrations, and that children can relate to them.  These books have quite a range of readability partly because children are at such different reading levels and because like to be challenged one day and like to read for pleasure on another.  Every book does not need to be an exercise in reading.  Once we turn reading into a lesson we have lost some of the fun and enjoyment of it.  Think about your children coming to ask if they can watch tv.  It is a pleasure activity. Now what if they asked to look at a book in the same way?  That is what we are striving for.  Don’t be afraid to include activity books, puzzle books, colouring books with a brief story included with them.  Always be mindful that children at this age need and love to be read to as well.  Take turns picking and choosing books to read aloud for enjoyment and also to expose your children to books they may not pick up on their own.

Below are our kids’ choices for 6-8 year olds.  9-12 and 13-16 will be coming in the next couple of posts.  Please add your own comments on what your kids love to read or have read to them.

Thoughts on Books

Yesterday was our daughter’s birthday and two of her presents were books.  This got my wife and I thinking about holidays and birthdays when we were kids and it just wasn’t right unless you got a new book to dive into.

In our family we try to have books around just for incidental pick up.  We home educate our kids and books are a big part of our lives.  There was an article a while ago on Good -Education’s website which mentioned having books in the house was directly related to how far a person went in school.  The original paper is entitled “Family scholarly culture and educational success: Books and schooling in 27 nations” which outlines that having a home library may be a bigger factor in how far a person pursues their education in relation to parent’s education, employment and class.  It was an interesting read.

My wife and I were thinking, how did we acquire our books?  We don’t have a lot of money and books are expensive.  Well, we discovered that there were a few common ways that kept popping up.  Receiving books for presents, our whole family has books on their present lists.  Library sales are a great way to pick up books cheap.  Second hand bookstores also offer a great way to accumilate books.

Books from the library are great and increase your access to books and we do that as well, but having books in the home means they are always available when the mood strikes you to pick one up.

Welcome To Our Blog

Hi, I’m Will and this blog is all about my wife Kirsten and my journeys through the home education world.

We have been home educating our children for the past eight years and thought we would share some information with other home educators.  Sometimes finding information can be tough, we live in an age where information is at our fingertips and the sheer amount can be overwhelming espcially when you are beginning a journey like home schooling.

We are new to the blog world, but thought we would give it a try as a way to share information.  Our plan is a bi-weekly blog on education in general and thoughts and ideas for home educators.
