Education - Home
When my family and I began our journey of home education over eight years ago, we like a lot of new
homeschoolers began searching for programs that would work well in our family. As our family grew,
our needs changed, we realized that we no longer fit a program for one age group, and found
ourselves educating children in all three levels (grammar, logic, and rhetoric).
We also began to notice that it was increasing difficult to find programs that focussed on a Canadian
point of view. We did find some Canadian history programs eventually but they were for one level,
which did not meet the needs of our growing family. As well, we wanted something more holistic where
literature was as important as history. We finally gave up looking and developed our own program.
Since that time, we have repeatedly heard other families looking for Canadian programming as well.
As such, we took our Canada unit, realized that what we had rushed into a quarter of year could
easily be covered in a whole year. When we mentioned to our children that we were bringing this unit
out to look again, they all started with, “Oh, I remember we did...”
Our intent in beginning with a blended Canadian history and literature unit is to expand and offer
more unit and lesson plan options to home educators. We also wanted to share our love of Canadian
literature and offer study plans which emphasize Canadian content.
We believe education should be fun. When you are engaged and interested in an activity you
automatically put more energy into it and retain more from it.
