Unit 1 - Canada, The Beginnings

Unit 1 looks at the beginnings of Canada from prehistory to 1760.  Through the nine weeks
of this unit topics covered are Canada's First People, The Vikings, Cabot and Cartier, The
Pirate Explorers, Champlain, New France, The English, The Fur Trade and The Fight for
Canada.

Because the history component is looking at prehistory and early recorded history the
literature will be based around "Survival in an Untamed Land".  There are a variety of
readings for each level including poetry, short stories, novels, picture books, and video.

A sample of
week 3 and week 5 can be downloaded.

Adobe Reader is require to view the samples.

The full downloadable version of the unit 1 will be up very soon.  If you have questions,
comments, or suggestions please

Canadian History and Literature Curriculum
We are in the process of developing four units on Canadian History.  The units will be nine
weeks in length and can be combined into a full-year history and literature curriculum.  The
literature component complements the history. The intent is to study and learn about
literature and is therefore not limited to historical fiction which can sometimes overshadow
the literary elements.
Lifelong Education and Fun
Each unit is set up for three age groups to
help educators with multi-age students to
use the same program and still have it age
or ability appropriate.  The age groups
include:
  • grammar (5-9 years old)
  • logic (10-13 years old)
  • rhetoric (14+)
There is a variety of activities and projects
for each age group each week including:
  • colouring pages
  • map work
  • cooking projects
  • building projects
  • crosswords
  • word searches
  • writing projects.
